FOIL VS SPRAY
The sprays found in ads in your mailbox and heard on radio are not radiant barriers. As defined by the U.S. Government, the sprays you keep hearing about are coatings...not radiant barriers. Sprays are technically called "reflective coatings."
True radiant barriers must reflect away at least 90% of the heat entering your attic. Sprays reflect as little as 10% of the radiant heat.
If you go with a spray coating, be sure to ask a number of questions like, is the installer first applying a primer to the underside of your decking, coating the rafters too, are there thin areas and what about the fumes and fire hazards?
Also, watch the installer open the cans. Check the labels on the cans. And, always be sure you are getting what you are paying for.
GTri-Foil is absolutely the best heavy-weight foil on the market today. And, GTri-Foil is perfect every time. It's 100% guaranteed to reflect away 97% of the heat entering your attic.
Here is a report by RIMA which did independent testing on several different reflective coatings. Even the best paint reflects only 78% of the radiant heat compared to 97% for Rhino Foil. The worst spray reflected only 10% of the heat entering the attic.
IMPORTANT: The tests were on perfectly smooth wood samples under laboratory conditions...not your attic. Your attic decking is made of porous wood. Reflective sprays do not create a smooth, shiny film required to be fully effective. To maximize the reflectivity, your attic decking must be primed with a primer/base coating first
